BCU Courses

The Coaching Awards have been up-dated and developed to meet with the needs of today’s coaches and to provide them with better recognition within the UK sports industry. These developments have been based on findings from both the Paddlesport Review and Long Term Paddler Development Review and reflect current best practice within UK Paddlesport and Coaching.

The result is a dynamic coaching pathway which benefits both recreational and competition coaches and their students, providing them with structure and support as they progress. The new awards offer national accreditation by the BCU, the UKCC (UK Coaching Certificate), and the National Qualifications Framework.

BCU / UKCC Level 1 Certification in Coaching Paddlesport

This is the first step on the paddlesport coaching pathway. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of good coaching practice and help you to understand and coach technical and tactical aspects of your sport.

The Level 1 award is for those new to paddlesport coaching. The award is not discipline specific and is therefore suitable for coaches who wish to work with paddlers from any of the competitive and non-competitive paddlesport disciplines. The level 1 coach can plan, deliver, and review short coaching sessions; normally with the support of a more qualified coach. They can work with paddlers at any stage of development; receiving specific training to coach paddlers in their first year of activity and to run taster sessions.

Fundamentally this course is designed for paddlers and coaches irrespective of their chosen craft, or as may be the case for coaches, as either a boat based or bank based Coach. The objective is to teach simple and safe skills that can be applied appropriately.

Course Aims

  • To provide the paddler, boat based or bank based Coach with the appropriate rescue skills to be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty.

 Pre-requisits:

  • Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required the candidate paddler or boat based coach would need to either to hold the 2 Star Award or be of that ability.
  • The bank based coach waccessing he course would not be required to hold the 2 Star Award, however, they should be prepared to fully participate in all relevant aspects of the course.
  • Be able to swim in normal canoeing clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.
  • A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite; however the holding of a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.
