Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need any canoeing experience?

A: No not at all, provided you can swim at least 50m then you can have a go.

Q: Can anyone paddle down the rapids?

A: There are a number of small rapids along the length of the Wye, but we only allow people take on the Grade 2 level rapids e.g. Symonds Yat Rapids, once they have done at least half a day's paddling first. If in doubt we advise to portage your boat or we can raft boats together to form more stable rafts.

Q: Are dogs welcome?

A: Definately, but must never be leashed to a canoe.

Q: Do I need to wear waterproof clothing?

A: No, but take a waterproof jacket with you in case it rains.  Wear loose clothing, if you wear a T-shirt take a long sleeved shirt for any changeable weather conditions.

A: Trainers or sandles but not flip flops or wellington boots.

Q: What is the minimum age?

A: 5 is the minimum age unless the main hirer can produce NGB paddling awards certificates.

Q: Is there a weight limit for the canoes?

A: There is a weight limit, but it is unlikely to be reached - our boats have a limit of up to 80 stone, we do not allow boats to get any where near these load maximums for safety.  Old Town Discovery Boat Details
