After a crazy bank holiday with some fantastic weather we can take a breath here at www.wyecanoes.com. It was our busiest weekend so far this year and the weather was just perfect. Customers had the time of their lives and it was great to see the Wye Valley so busy again. Lets hope for some more for the next bank holiday in a few weeks. For now we are happy taking a day off and enjoying a barbecue and few glasses of pear cider.

Canoe Hire Season Starts..almost..

With March 1st coming around faster than expected that signals the start of the canoe hire season, but as with most years the actual start of the canoe hire season is dependant on environmental conditions; river height, water temp etc…and although the river level is back to normal we are still in a bit of a cold spell. Air temperature here in the Wye gorge is maxing out at about 7 deg and the water temp is around 5.5 deg. That us still a little too cold for a lot of people to be out on the river if they don’t have the equipment or experience to deal with a swim, so we will be waiting for the weather to improve and little before we allow our customers out on the river unguided. Lets hope next weekend looks a little better for mothers day.http://www.wyecanoes.com/

REC 2 Day First Aid Course

After a few requests for another First Aid Course at the begining of March we have decided to cancel the one on the 23/24 Feb and move everything onto the first weekend in March, so the final dates are the 3/4 March 2013, that is a Saturday and Sunday and accommodation is available for those who need it. What a great thing to wake up to; a few inches of snow. The forest and the gorge look great with a covering of the white stuff, only downside is the coaching session tomorrow looks like a no go, I don’t think the customers are going to make it.

Wye Invader Still in Symonds Yat

The Wye Invader a 230 ton, 38m long dutch barge is still sat above the rapids here at Symonds Yat today on its journey back down the Wye. The barge built in the 1930′s was originally taken up the Wye in 1989 with the idea of being a floating restaurant at Hereford, unfortunately planning permission was never granted for the floating restaurant and it has more recently been on the side of the river south of Hereford. It’s the largest vessel ever to navigate the Wye and the trip up took nearly a year. On the 29th November 2012 whilst the river was in flood the barge started to make it’s way down river, with only a few minor collisions the Invader made it to Symonds Yat and has been here ever since, moored just above the rapids. It is said that the barge is on it’s way down river to the river Severn and dry dock, then what happen’s we are unsure about, there are rumours that it is to go back up the Wye, but who know’s.
