Ross-on-Wye to Kerne Bridge

You can meet us at either Kerne Bridge or Ross for this trip. The launching point for Ross-on-Wye is in front of the Riverside Inn and is sign posted from the road.

After kitting you out and going through our safety briefing it’s on the river only a few minutes before you pass the romantic 12 century Wilton Castle on the right hand bank, the castle is believed to have been built out of local sandstone in the second half of the 12th Century. You will now pass under Wilton Bridge and leave Ross heading south through meadows and some lovely scenery passing gravel beaches perfect for a picnic as the Wye meanders towards the much larger ruinous Norman medievel castle at Goodrich. It was praised by William Wordworth as “The noblest ruin in Herefordshire”, and is considered by historian Adrian Pettifer to be the “most splendid in the county, and one of the best examples of English military architecture”. After passing Goodrich you will be see the 3 arches of Kerne Bridge itself, you don’t finish here though, the landing stage for your exit is just around the corner on the left after you pass underneath the bridge. There is a pub nearby, the Inn on the Wye, which can be accessed by crossing the road from the landing site. There is accomodation at the Inn on the Wye.
On the paddle down look out for:

  • 1. Wilton Castle, a romantic 12th Century sandstone Castle in Ross.
  • 2. Goodrich Castle, a ruined 12th Century Castle that overlooks the river.
  • 3. Kerne Bridge, a 3-arch stone bridge spanning the river.
  • 3.Kerne Bridge landing stage 5 minutes after passing the bridge.
